One of the first turning points of my life started at the KSA (Korea Science Academy) – a special high school for the gifted which is often called the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) of Korea.

When I was a junior in university, my father lost his job for the first time in his life due to the aftermath of the "Subprime Mortgage Crisis". This was a great shock to my family, including my father. Even though I was receiving a presidential scholarship, I still had to work part-time at a private educational institute late into the night, and during the weekend, until my father was able to get a stable job again. Before long, I began to understand that many parts of the financial market and products were based on advanced quantitative analysis, and that the one main cause of the disastrous global financial crisis was inappropriate models and wrong decisions made by many financial experts.

I was the only student who exceptionally admitted as a research assistant in professor U Jin Choi’s laboratory despite being an undergraduate student.

My current research interests include financial engineering and econometrics, based on probability and stochastic models or applied statistics. I want to tame the Wild West landscape of financial sector innovation, so that risks are properly quantified to financial practitioners. Albeit, the complex modern world of finance first gave me the motivation to study operations research, I know that there are also numerous other realms involving applications of operations research that stimulate my intellectual curiosity, Thus, as a masters student, I want to explore various possibilities for applied operations research while solidifying my theoretical background to solve quantitative decision problems over a wide range of domains. In the future, I want to contribute my analytical skills to finding a solution to a variety of problems in relevant areas such as finance, risk management, marketing, biomedical analysis, and transportation systems, as a quantitative analyst. I firmly believe that my graduate school life at MIT ORC will prepare me well to continue to ascend to greater heights of success in my professional career as a distinguished MIT alumnus. However, I am also considering continuing my studies in a doctorate program as my long-term goal. With my outstanding passion for learning and research, I try to keep myself open to both possibilities.

The MIT ORC offers everything that I am looking for. MIT is the global top research university, and many eminent professors from various departments including Sloan School of Management carry out interesting and innovative interdisciplinary research. I believe that I will be able to have an opportunity to do direct research involving my areas of interest. Among faculty members of ORC, there is a professor Andrew W. Lo, whose work has had a big impact on my life. I am extremely impressed by his articles and books on financial markets including “A Non-Random Walk Down Wall Street”. It will be great honor for me to take his classes as an MIT student. Finally and most importantly, MIT is the academic birthplace of operations research.

Your work is good. I have left most of the technical vocabulary alone and it seems ok. I was not sure of the full meaning of some of your sentences so I corrected them as I thought they should be interpreted.
