Technology is useless for improvement of humanity.
Humanity has made little real
progress over the past century or so. Technological innovations have taken
place, but the overall condition of humanity is no better. War, violence and
poverty are still with us. Technology cannot change the condition of humanity.
Do technology and innovation provide
solutions for violence and poverty, or are they the cause of some of the today’s
problems hindering the progress of humanity? The speaker claims that technology
cannot bring about changes in humanity, for the reason that famine and calamity
caused by human error still exist. I disagree that the remark, because the
speaker gives undue value to responsibility of technology for advancement of
human condition. Specifically, America and its allied countries are still
fighting for the war against terrorism, while the people living in some areas
around the world suffer from a lack of shelter, food and medicine. Otherwise, I
am of the opinion that, it is undeniable that technological innovations have
made spectacular improvements on the conditions of human life in the past
century.
Admittedly, past century’s inventions have
not yet solved the problems of humanity. To be specific, it is a true that automobiles
are often used as the convoy of the soldiers and satellites are also employed
as pivotal tool for conducting modern missile attacking system, despite the
fact we have had comfort and convenient life because of those helpful modern
inventions. However, it is hard to say that the misfortunes in mankind are the
full liability of technology. Innovations have made from good will to make a
progress in human history, not for the harmful intention. For instance,
dynamite was initially invented by Alfred Novel. His intention was to use the
bomb helpful for work in mine, instead of using dangerous liquid bomb. Unlike
his motive, the bomb was used for wars and violence. He was tormented by a
guilty conscience. Thus before his dying breath, he contributed to the birth of
the prize, which is awarded for those who commit to peace and progress of the
world, named “Nobel Prize”. Therefore, many disasters seen in the world is not solely
because of technology, but resulted from indiscreet use of technology of the human
being.
On the contrary, progress in technology
field has led to good results in terms of solving poverty in the world. For
example, green revolution in the 1960s, played important role in increasing
crop yield. Increased grain production could help to reduce famine in many
developing countries at the time. In addition, there has been a movement to
apply technology to increasing condition of humanity in the developing countries.
The movement is called as “Appropriate technology.” Appropriate technology is
focused on how to practically help marginalized people without charging them
for high cost. Lifestraw is a good example of Appropriate technology, because
it functions as good drinking water supply tool by eliminating impurities
immediately from water with bad quality. This is how advancement in technology
helps improvement of humanity.
An old maxim said, “where there’s a
will, there’s a way.” If technological innovations go with good intention, it
will bring about significant change in conditions of human life as we have seen
in the foregoing examples. The important thing is how technological strides are
used for which reasons. In this regard, I am not fully in favor of the
statement that technology cannot contribute to any good change in humanity.
