Wilfred Owen (history homework)
As you read this poem, it shows us the meaninglessness and brutality of war as well as sorrow. So many people were inspired by this poem and it became one of the greatest war poems. You might think the poet who wrote this was an elder who had already tasted the bitters and sweets of life. But incredibly, when the poet was writing this poem, his age was under 25. How could he write about the profundity of war?
Born in Oswestry, England, on March 18, 1893, Owen was the eldest of four children. His father’s job was in connection with the railway. His mother, Susan Owen, was strict in her Christian religious beliefs. In their evangelical Anglican household, he and his siblings had also a strong belief in Christ.
When his grandfather died in 1897, Owen's family moved to Birkenhead because of his father’s work and from 1900 to 1907, he attended the Birkenhead Institute. He went to Shrewsbury Technical School at the age of 14. At this time, Owen had already cut a brilliant figure in poetry, and he started writing poetry when he was 17. His mother warmly supported about these ambitions. Desiring a higher education, he studied botany at University College before matriculating at the University of London.
He had to scrap, gaining a resident place at the university because of a shortage of money for tuition. So Owen worked for a year as a assistant to Reverend Herbert Wiggin, who is a vicar. However, here , he was shocked so much because he found that Wiggin’s lifestyle was not modesty. Wiggin and the rich who were a few people had a gorgeous big house and lived affluently while the poor who were usually most citizen in the parish lived one room hovels or gave up their lives. Watching the look, Owen developed sympathy for the poor. The look put Owen in pain not just emotionally but physically as well. This case happen to be a vital opportunity to give up his faith of Christianity to him.
In February 1913, he went back his home with heavy heart. Staying this house, he had wanted to teach English and finally, he moved to Bordeaux,France to teach English at the Berlitz School. Here, he met Laurent Tailhade who was a French poet. At that time, he started drinking alcohol and smoking.
At the start of the war, Owen visited at Baigneres veterans administration hospital and he saw many wounded French soldiers and then, he drew a picture with great and graphic details. But in later years, his action has been surrounded by controversy because critics say he had voyeuristic tendencies and it was changed the whole pity because of war.
