This is because people are distracted easily while studying alone, and because learning by yourself can be lonely.

However, audience effect, which is a term describing situation that people are doing better in front of other people, will ameliorate studying efficiency when studying with a teacher. For example, most people who try to pick up languages on their own often are unable to focus their mental energy. This is because learning language mainly consists of memorizing work, which does not need thinking ability a lot. In this case, acquiring languages by communicating with one another can bring about greater outcome to students. Therefore, learning by oneself is not effective as studying in a group is.
