Only rich people are successful
Some people may think that money is the
only way to be successful. However, in my opinion, there are many who do not
earn much money but are successful. This is because many academics are
widely-respected in their fields but do not earn a lot of money, and because
success does not have to be determined by money.
One reason is that a lot of scholars are
well-renowned in their area regardless of their insufficient financial gain. This
is to say, reasons for their reputation can be said that it is because of their
knowledge, analyses and academic achievement. However, it does not mean that
their outcomes always have commercial value, even though they are academically
meaningful. Generally speaking, lucrative parts in study are usually very
confined, and economical benefit is not commensurate to how important a certain
academic outcome is. For one thing, professors at Ivy League universities are
often world-renown but earn little money. This is because that most of them get
paid from universities, issue books and give lectures outside schools is the
primary source for earning money. As we have seen, this can be helpful to make
some money, but not so helpful to make big fortune.
Another reason is that money is not sole
criterion when deciding success. So to speak, there are many criteria to judge
what successful life is. Some people define success by accomplishment, on the
other hand, other people say that successful life can be defined by satisfying
social relationship, feeling happy every day. Thus, many can be thought as
successful people by diverse standards. For instance, activists like Mahatma
Gandhi and Nelson Mandela believed that money was not that important and yet
were still very successful in accomplishing their dreams. These historical
figures are regarded as successful leaders in history and role models because
of their patience and achievement in their lives. This implies that value like
achievement can be a significant factor in defining success.
In conclusion, not only do numerous
academics who have good reputation not make a lot of fortune, but success also
can be judged by different standards. For these reasons, I am in favor of the
idea that the rich do not have successful lives at all times.
