school should buy books or computers?
Some people may think that purchasing
high-tech device will benefit students in many ways. However, I think that the
school should spend money on new books for the library. This is because not
enough children read books on their free time, and because the overall cost of
buying book for a library is less than purchasing computers.
To begin with, few children have enough
exposure to books on their spare time. To be specific, children these days
spend most of their time playing video games and watching TV, often on
computers. Books are conducive to stimulating children’s creativity, strengthening
reading ability and vocabulary without mentioning that it is beneficial to
their thinking ability. Considering its educational benefit, it is natural for
school to purchase books. A recent survey implemented by The Korea education
ministry revealed how children spend their time per week. According to the
survey, they usually spend time on computers for 20 hours per week. They also
have the same hours for cellular phone, and 15 hours for watching TV. On the
contrary, the time children read books except for their class material was only
4 hours. This implies how severely children lack the time to read books. Compared
to books, children already have enough exposure to electronic devices. In
addition to books’ educational effects, in turn, buying books is a better way
for children.
On top of that, purchasing books are more
cost-effective. In other words, books can be purchased in bulk at very
low-rates while the average computer can cost several hundred dollars. Computer
is accumulation of high-tech, so it is hard to avoid its expensive price.
Furthermore, if school buys computers, then they should take potential costs
because computers will generally be outdated after 3years from purchase time.
School then has to consider whether they repurchase or update all computers
they already bought. Hence, books are much less costly material in comparison
to computer if schools take future costs into consideration.
In summary, not only does securing the printed
media give children the chance to read book in school, but it can also be a
realistic way to reduce overall cost than purchasing electronic device. In this
respect, I agree with the statement that purchasing books is much better for
school to provide students with good education than buying computers.
